The holiday decorations are already in the stores – and it’s a fine reminder that there are about five (six?) working weeks left in the year. And, of course, our annual giving drive is just around the corner. I hope all you all are ready for the many, many, many emails that all the organizations you care about are going to send you. Your support funds all the impactful things that Sci4Ga does – like the events listed below!
As we close out the year – we have one Georgia Science Junction left on the books – Nov 14th at Mutation Brewing! Science Junction: Bringing Precision to Medicine – Science for Georgia
Now, let’s reflect on how awesome October was!
We hosted two SciComm Academies (thank you Imlay Foundation) – one at Georgia College and State University and one at Georgia State University. Reaching over 60 students thus far! Before the end of 2023, we’ve got classes at Georgia Gwinnett College, College of Costal Georgia, Clayton State University, and Emory.
We hosted three more Fireside chats – highlighting community programs in Georgia that are having an impact. Coming soon – recaps and videos of all four events! These chats were a follow on to our Environmental Justice and Climate Protection Conference – which will return in June of 2024 on the coast!
We had an amazing Georgia Science Tavern at Georgia Public Broadcasting with over 30 people in person and a few people taking advantage of our streaming online. Thank you to the incredible Mark Mandica from Amphibian Foundation for a great talk about our amphibian friends.
Along with Rep Becky Evans, New Life Community Alliance, Georgia Interfaith Power and Light, Georgia Conservation Voters, Georgia State, South River Watershed Alliance, Georgia WAND, and with support from The Community Corps, and sponsorship by GA Power and Snapping Shoals EMC, we hosted an Environmental Justice Take Action & Listening Session. Over 40 residents of South DeKalb came together to learn about energy burden relief and how their community can work together to qualify for Federal and State money to address environmental issues in their neighborhood. Facilitators listened to their concerns, and now Sci4Ga is going to take these top concerns, understand evidence-based best practices, and work with partners and the community to take individual and collective action in South DeKalb. We will be back to host another event in late January and late April.
We held a Climate Survival Training on Flood and Drought Management.
Thank you for making #sciencematterhere and all that you do to support the Science for Georgia community.
