Satilla River in Danger from Chickens

The Satilla River, a vital part of southeastern Georgia, is in danger from 60 proposed chicken houses that will sit on its banks.

Georgia is a poultry friendly state, but this development is rather dangerous to the surrounding community because:

  1. It is in a floodplain, where dead chickens will poison the water after any severe storm. The surrounding community is still digging out from Hurricane Helene.
  2. Even if there is no severe storm, there is high chance of chicken waste running off into the river, causing fish kills.
  3. This is a high concentration of chicken houses. Typically, there are less than 20 houses at any single site due to bird flu risk. (Which, we are no longer tracking.)
