Location: South River Art Studios 1300 Fleetwood Dr SE, Atlanta, GA 30316

Fences and canopies don’t have to be made from wood and metal and such. Living structures can be made from Willow! In this workshop we will:

  • Learn to identify the continent’s largest and most common willow species, Salix nigra, also known as black willow, swamp willow, sauz, or gulf black willow.
  • Learn about the tree’s ecological importance, medicinal and other human uses, and its history and mythology.
  • Discuss the practice of coppicing trees, how to do it, and why.
  • (HANDS ON!!!) Assist with the harvesting and planting of willow whips to create a living structure(s) for the garden.

Julia Hill is a multi-disciplinary artist using drawing, painting, sculpture, and our extensive waste stream to explore ecological themes. This workshop is part of a series of projects that will explore how regenerative ecological practices and public art can intersect.

In addition to her studio pursuits, her business Sculpture Things provides a suite of services including custom fabrication, art direction, project management, and public art installation services for the region’s creative industries.
