We learn to read\, write and speak a language. And most all of us go through an entire life never really hearing the natural world around us. Never really understanding. Never really caring to listen. \nYet\, more and more studies are confirming that nature is talking…we just aren’t listening or understanding. \nIt took me most of my life to understand. It took countless photography trips deep into the Okefenokee Swamp and other wild places\, alone. It took slowing down and listening. Its mission is to improve communication among scientists and the public\, increase public engagement with science\, and advocate for the responsible use of science in public policy. In this role she is spearheading achieving Science for Georgia’s vision and mission. \nPrior to joining Science for Georgia\, she was VP of Product for Prediko\, a start-up that was successfully acquired by United Technologies Corp. Dr. Sharma has worked in many aspects of the engineering field: spearheading the development of the big data vertical and managing a $1M annual Independent Research and Development (IRAD) program at GTRI\, working as an Assistant Professor in Medical Physics at the University of Western Australia\, working as an Assistant Program Manager for the National Science Foundation\, receiving political and outreach training as a AAAS Science and Technology Policy Fellow\, obtaining a PhD in Biomedical Engineering at Duke University\, and designing hardware logic for advanced server microprocessors at IBM. \nDr Sharma enjoys difficult challenges\, jobs with overly long titles\, developing big-picture strategies\, communicating scientific and technical ideas to non-scientists\, sewing\, and smoking various foods. \n  \nGeorgia Science Junction

By his early twenties\, he was deeply immersed in the world of mushrooms\, experimenting with wild foraging in South Florida\, yeast cultivation for brewing\, and even developing early prototypes for automated indoor growing systems. His academic journey\, culminating in a Ph.D. in Applied and Environmental Microbiology from Georgia State University\, further deepened his understanding of fungal biology. It was at GSU where he met fellow graduate student Chris Cornelison\, who would later become his co-founder\, and shared a similar passion for mycology. While his graduate research explored the complexities of fungal biology\, focusing on areas like fungal pathogens and brewing science\, it solidified his belief in the immense potential of mushrooms. \nAfter graduating and joining Kennesaw State University in 2017\, Dr. Gabriel\, along with fellow researcher Dr. Cornelison\, saw a critical need for accessible and effective growing solutions for cultivators of all levels. They began pursuing mushroom-related research in Dr. Cornelison’s Bioinnovation Laboratory at KSU. Sci4Ga’s Data for Georgia program has developed several story maps in service of various Georgia communities. Learn what we have discovered\, ways to use this information to take action\, and how you can get involved. \n  \nHow much is deforestation causing increased flood risk? \nCould a power plant near you be affecting your health and quality of life? \nIs your community facing health risks due to poor water quality? \n  \nWe have some answers to these important questions. Students in the Quantitative Theory and Methods program have been working under the guidance of Data for Georgia (our data science branch) to answer these questions through the creation of data stories. Ask at the Bar if the door is closed. \nWhy is it so hard for third-party candidates to win modern elections? How does voting in political races differ from the way college teams are ranked or how the Oscars are awarded? And how can a business\, city\, or state choose among multiple candidates for a program without a costly and time-consuming runoff procedure? The answers to these questions can be found in understanding concepts from Ranked Choice Voting and Game Theory\, a branch of mathematics devoted to interactive decisions.   \nIf you’ve heard phrases like “win-win” and “zero-sum” or seen movies like “The Dark Knight” and “A Beautiful Mind”\, you’ve already been exposed to ideas from game theory.
