SUMMARY:Georgia Energy Burden Community Event
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=””]\nOnline and In-person \nGeorgia Institute of Technology in partnership with the Sierra Club in Georgia released an energy burden report highlighting the oversized financial burden Black households face in Georgia. \nThe report shows how Black households in Georgia face disproportionately high energy burdens\, including historic discrimination and disinvestment in infrastructure. The report goes a step further than similar studies by conducting surveys of energy-burdened households to find out what other consequences they face when they spend a significant portion of their income on energy bills. \nGA WAND and Brown & Associates have developed a workshop on how changes in policy change your rates. After a presentation on the report\, they will lead us in an interactive workshop. \nJoin Science for Georgia\, the Sierra Club\, GA WAND\, and Brown & Associates for a presentation and workshop on what this means to you\, your community\, and how you can create change. \n\nAgenda\n7 pm – Welcome \n7:10 to 7:40 – Sierra Club Energy Burden Presentation \n7:40 to 8:20ish – The Public Service Commission energy workshop \n8:20 to 9pm – Community Discussion \n  \nFood and Drinks will be available \nAtlanta Utility Works – 2903 RN Martin St.\, East Point\, Ga 30344 \nRSVP now to reserve your seat. \nEnergy Burden\n[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

SUMMARY:Georgia Science Junction - Navigating the Flow: Visualizing How Water is Managed
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_column_text css=””]Saturday\, July 27\, 7-9 pm \nIn-Person and Streaming \nLocation: Manuel’s Tavern\, 602 N Highland Ave NE\, Atlanta\, GA 30307 \nFeatured Speakers: Maya Goldman and Chris Rice\n \nHave you ever wondered how utilities and governments understand\, plan and manage the vast amounts of water flowing through their communities? Hear the planning and global information systems perspective. What tools exist to map out the array of water infrastructure in your communities? How are national and local data utilized to understand and plan for an array of water related challenges? From raining and rivers to treatment and taps\, we’ll give a high-level overview with interactive mapping and imagery. Hopefully by the end you know a little more about how communities manage water\, and how data\, science\, and city planning come together to build more resilient and reliable systems.[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][vc_column_text css=”” text_align=”left” font_size=”24px” line_height=”1.2em” font_weight=”bold”]More About Our Speakers[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner][vc_empty_space][vc_column_text css=””]Maya Goldman\nTechnical Assistance Manager & Stormwater Planner\, Metropolitan North Georgia Water Planning District \nMaya Goldman serves as Stormwater Principal Planner and Technical Assistance Program Manager for the Metropolitan North Georgia Water Planning District\, helping local communities with stormwater management and flooding challenges and connecting regional partners to available District resources. \nMaya has a passion for public policy and a technical background in various water resources subjects from her previous work in engineering consulting. SUMMARY:Climate Survival Training: Growing Edible Mushrooms at Home
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_column_text css=””]\nLog Inoculation for Beginners\nDate: Thursday\, July 18 \nTime: 7 – 8:30 pm \nLocation: Unearthing Farm & Market\, 1534 Memorial Dr SE\, Atlanta\, GA 30317 \nEducator: Xander \nDescription: Food resiliency means having diverse sources of nutrients so that when one fails\, you have options. Mushrooms can be a great source of nutrients and are totally possible to grow at home. Our friend Xander will train us on spores and how to inoculate and care for your own mushroom log\, and potentially also how to do this with local strains you find in your backyard! Parking is free at the farm and all are welcome! \n✨Accessibility : the farm has uneven ground and can get a little muddy at times\, though it’s largely navigable and the mulched pathways are soft. While there’s parking and restrooms onsite and nearby\, please reach out with any specific accessibility questions so that we can accommodate as many folks as possible 😌CST Garden\n[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_column_text css=””]\nCST Garden\n[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

SUMMARY:Environmental Justice in South DeKalb: Water Testing Training
DESCRIPTION:Location: Everett Park\, 5106 Klondike Rd\, Lithonia\, GA 30038 \nDate: Sunday May 19th \nTime: 11am \nDescription: \nFollowing our series of environmental justice forums in South DeKalb this year\, the greatest community need became clear. Much more information about the health threats present is needed. While our data science branch continues to collect and examine information from many public data resources\, it is clear that more testing will be needed. We cannot wait around for governmental agencies to do this testing for us\, we must take this issue into our own hands with community testing. \nThis training is the first step in developing a data gathering community project that can generate a well-researched set of knowledge and tools to continue with advocacy for the well being of South DeKalb. And don’t forget\, water testing is fun! \n \nEJ-SD Water Testing
