DESCRIPTION:Science for Georgia Presents: \nMad Scientists\, Sad Jokes \nA special Jazz Hands Science Comedy to Save Science\nClick here to purchase tickets \n\n\n\n\n\n\nScience funding is under attack and Scientists are losing jobs. We no longer have anyone watching what they do. What happens when scientists have too much free time? They go a little MAD and start telling JOKES! \n\n\n\n\n\n\nEvery year we train a cohort of scientists\, technologists\, engineers\, mathematicians\, physicians (anyone STEM-adjacent) in the art of stand-up comedy. The result? A live stand-up show where normal science & technology professionals tell jokes about their work and studies. \nLaugh! Maybe learn something! Support some comedy and keep our scientists happy! \nClick here to purchase tickets \nSept 19\, 2025\n7:30-9:30pm\, doors 7:00pm\nWild Heaven Beer: West End Brewery & Gardens\n1010 White St SW\, Atlanta\, GA 30310 \nPresenting Sponsor\n\nA special thank you to Wild Heaven Beer! They are generously providing the space for this event. \nTickets\n\nTickets include comedy performances. Taqueria El Tesoro is available. Cash bar available serving beer and wine.\nAGES 21+ ONLY. The property management company is shifting from complimentary parking to a paid system\, with the rollout beginning over the next couple weeks. \nFor this event\, you will not have to pay for parking. However\, you are asked to engage with the new system upon arrival by starting a “parking session” at the posted signs (via the app or QR code). This simply registers your car\, but no payment or validation will be required for this event. \nLooking ahead\, please know that under Wild Heaven’s lease terms\, neither their guests nor our event attendees will ever be charged for parking. That said\, you will still need to register your cars in the system before validating your parking with Wild Heaven once the system is fully in place. \nIf you have any trouble\, please see us at the check in table in the Garden Room.

SUMMARY:Georgia Science Junction - How Psychedelics Affect the Mind
DESCRIPTION:Friday\, November 22nd\, 7-9 pm \nIn-Person and Streaming \nLocation: Wild Heaven Brewing\, West End – 1010 White St SW\, Atlanta\, GA 30310 \nFeatured Speaker: Bradley Cooke\, PhD\n \nChaos to New Order: How Psychedelics Affect the Mind – 2024 Update \nFor decades\, strict drug laws rendered practically impossible research on psychedelic drugs such as psilocybin and lysergic acid. Recent years\, however\, have seen an explosion of studies into these substances and their effects at nearly every level of analysis—from the workings of brain cells to the behavior of lab animals to patients suffering from debilitating anxiety\, PTSD\, and depression. The effects of psychedelic drugs are just beginning to be explored by basic research and there is much we do not understand. However\, when viewed through the framework of a new theory of brain function—termed the “predictive processing model”—their effects offer new insight to one of the greatest mysteries of science: Consciousness. The model says that consciousness is as much about the brain’s best guess about the world as it is about the patterns of energy received by our senses. Cognitive neuroscientist Bradley Cooke will discuss recent research findings\, interpret the effects of psychedelics on consciousness\, and look at what value such substances hold for psychotherapy. \nAbout Our Speaker:    \n \nBradley Cooke has been a neuroscientist for more than 20 years. He received his Ph.D. from UC Berkeley in 2000 and completed a postdoctoral fellowship at Northwestern University before being appointed at Georgia State\, where he was promoted to associate professor before leaving to work in public service. He is now an official at the National Institutes of Health\, where he oversees the nation’s portfolio of research focused on the neurobiology of obesity and metabolic disease.   \n  \n  \nGSJ Nov

SUMMARY:Georgia Science Junction – Are Crypto and AI a Sustainable Future?
DESCRIPTION:*Rescheduled from Sept 26th to Oct 3rd due to Hurricane Helene*\nAll tickets purchased for previous date will be honored for the new date. If you can not attend the new date\, please contact us at patrick.ryan@sci4ga.org for a refund. Please stay safe during this inclement weather. \nOctober 3rd\, 7pm – 9pm \nIn-Person and Streaming \nLocation: Lounge Area\, Wild Heaven\, West End\, 1010 White St SW\, Atlanta\, GA 30310 \nFeatured Speakers: Vijay Madisetti\, Fellow IEEE\, AIIA and Xiao Huang\, Ph.D.\, \n \nAre Crypto and AI a Sustainable Future? \nIn current practice\, Crypto Mining and Artificial Intelligence algorithms are very power hungry. \nWe just turned on two new reactors at Plant Vogle and 1 Plant Vogle Reactor (1.2 MW) can serve 1.2 million households OR about 6 Data Centers. As our power bills keep rising\, and average humans look for ways to lower their energy consumption\, will Crypto and AI gobble-up the gains we are making? Fortunately\, researchers are working on new\, energy-efficient algorithms. Join us to learn why the current practice is so very hungry and about new algorithms that can provide the same\, or better\, computation at a fraction of the power usage. \n  \n\n\n\n\nMore About Our Speakers: \nVijay Madisetti\, Fellow IEEE\, AIIA\, Professor @ Georgia Tech\, Cybersecurity and Privacy (SCP)\, College of Computing.\n\n\n\n\n\nVijay Madisetti earned a Bachelor of Technology (Honors) degree from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT)\, Kharagpur\, India\, in Electronics and Electrical Communications Engineering in 1984. Following this\, he went to the University of California at Berkeley where he earned a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences in 1989. \nDr. Madisetti joined the ECE faculty at Georgia Tech in 1989. He leads several research and educational programs at Georgia Tech in the area of digital signal processing\, embedded computing systems\, chip design\, wireless and telecom systems\, and systems engineering. He has authored or edited several books\, including VLSI Digital Signal Processors (1995) and the Digital Signal Processing Handbook (Second Edition\, 2010). He is also a frequent consultant to the industry. \nDr. Madisetti is a Fellow of the IEEE and was awarded the 2006 Frederick Emmons Terman Medal by the American Society of Engineering Education (ASEE) and HP Corporations for his contributions to electrical engineering. He is currently serving on several campus initiatives\, and is the Executive Director of Georgia Tech’s India Initiative. Dr. Madisetti also received the Georgia Tech Doctoral Thesis Advisor Award from Georgia Tech in 2001. \n\n\n\nXiao Huang\, Ph.D.\, Assistant Professor\, Department of Environmental Sciences\, Emory University \n\n\n\nDr. Huang’s research primarily focuses on human-environment interaction\, computational social sciences\, vulnerability and resilience\, urban informatics\, disaster mapping and mitigation\, GeoAI and deep learning\, and disaster remote sensing. Different from traditional geospatial analysis\, his research takes advantage of rapidly growing data availability through the utilization of emerging\, innovative data sources and the development of advanced geospatial analytical techniques to address existing/future challenges in disaster studies (e.g.\, real-time monitoring\, assessment\, and mitigation) and human society (e.g.\, human behaviors\, vulnerability\, and inequity) from Big Data and spatiotemporal perspectives. He built an academic career integrating his research and wide‐reaching public service while engaging with communities\, particularly socially disadvantaged communities.\n\n\n\n\nGSJ Sept

SUMMARY:Georgia Energy Burden Community Event
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=””]\nOnline and In-person \nGeorgia Institute of Technology in partnership with the Sierra Club in Georgia released an energy burden report highlighting the oversized financial burden Black households face in Georgia. \nThe report shows how Black households in Georgia face disproportionately high energy burdens\, including historic discrimination and disinvestment in infrastructure. The report goes a step further than similar studies by conducting surveys of energy-burdened households to find out what other consequences they face when they spend a significant portion of their income on energy bills. \nGA WAND and Brown & Associates have developed a workshop on how changes in policy change your rates. After a presentation on the report\, they will lead us in an interactive workshop. \nJoin Science for Georgia\, the Sierra Club\, GA WAND\, and Brown & Associates for a presentation and workshop on what this means to you\, your community\, and how you can create change. \n\nAgenda\n7 pm – Welcome \n7:10 to 7:40 – Sierra Club Energy Burden Presentation \n7:40 to 8:20ish – The Public Service Commission energy workshop \n8:20 to 9pm – Community Discussion \n  \nFood and Drinks will be available \nAtlanta Utility Works – 2903 RN Martin St.\, East Point\, Ga 30344 \nRSVP now to reserve your seat. \nEnergy Burden\n[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_column_text css=””]\nLog Inoculation for Beginners\nDate: Thursday\, July 18 \nTime: 7 – 8:30 pm \nLocation: Unearthing Farm & Market\, 1534 Memorial Dr SE\, Atlanta\, GA 30317 \nEducator: Xander \nDescription: Food resiliency means having diverse sources of nutrients so that when one fails\, you have options. Mushrooms can be a great source of nutrients and are totally possible to grow at home. Our friend Xander will train us on spores and how to inoculate and care for your own mushroom log\, and potentially also how to do this with local strains you find in your backyard! Parking is free at the farm and all are welcome! \n✨Accessibility : the farm has uneven ground and can get a little muddy at times\, though it’s largely navigable and the mulched pathways are soft. While there’s parking and restrooms onsite and nearby\, please reach out with any specific accessibility questions so that we can accommodate as many folks as possible 😌CST Garden\n[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_column_text css=””]\nCST Garden\n[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
