DESCRIPTION:Date: Sunday\, November 16\, 2025 \nTime: 10 am \nLocation: Everett Park \nAddress: 5106 Klondike Rd\, Stonecrest\, GA 30038 \nWe will linger in the parking lot for 5-10 minutes before heading down the trail along the water to those first shoals\, where we will be doing our testing and mingling etc…. \nThis past year at our Environmental Justice Forums/Townhalls we heard that people want to know more about what health risks from water and air are in their neighborhoods. So we have started on two approaches to that. First is the water testing project mentioned above. Adopt-A-Stream is a state program consisting of volunteers collecting data on the water sources in their neighborhoods and the area around Everett Park along the South River is not represented in this testing project. So we are getting this started\, not just to gather and monitor data\, but to help the community learn about water testing along the way.

Still got two mopeds in pieces\, so come look and learn! We will cover even more than last time! \nSurvival and sustainability go hand in hand. Not everyone can ride a bike everywhere and gas is getting more expensive and shortages are always possible. But Mopeds (really motor scooters) get around 100 miles per gallon! You can get a moped for cheap and getting a moped is a great way to learn about engines and gain useful knowledge for things like generators and lawnmowers and tractors and motorcycles and other alternative vehicles. And you can get a moped cheap. I recently got 3 mopeds for $200 and I’m going to bring you all along with the process of inspecting them\, diagnosing problems\, and diving in to fix them! Come on by its gonna be fun! \nPlease wear warm clothes\, we will be outside with the mopeds quite a bit. \nClimate Survival Training

Throughout history to the present day\, wars have been waged over this precious resource.  In Georgia\, conflicts have arisen with competitors in adjacent states and within our borders. This presentation will focus on surface water issues including the quantity and quality of water in the Chattahoochee-Flint and Savannah Rivers\, sewer spills and leaks\, and interbasin transfers. \nJohn Clarke\nSpeaker Name: \nJohn Clarke\, Retired Assistant Director\, USGS Georgia Water Science Center\, Atlanta\, Georgia\nSpeaker Bio: \nJohn Clarke retired in January 2014 after a 35-year career with the USGS Georgia Water Science Center. As hydrologist and Assistant Director for Hydrologic Investigations\, he authored or co-authored more than 50 papers on Georgia groundwater\, and twice served as president of the Georgia Ground Water Association.  Notable project work included study of the potential for offsite migration of contaminants at the U.S. Department of Energy’s Savannah River Site; development of a hydrologic overview of Israel\, Jordan\, and Palestinian territories as part of the State Department’s ongoing peace initiative; and design and implementation of the Georgia Coastal Sound Science Initiative—a 7 ½-year\, $14.5 million set of projects commissioned by the Georgia Environmental Protection Division to assess coastal area groundwater resources and address issues of salt-water intrusion and resource sustainability. John is a certified groundwater professional and received a BS Degree in Earth Sciences from the State University of New York at Brockport. \n

We face severe threats both on a political level and perhaps also from some members of our own families and communities. And it is because we do not agree\, we do not see the same things. \nBut the title of the talk is true\, things can be a lot better. The people who don’t agree could be seeing so much more of your side of things. We could be bringing far more of the voters in this country along with us on a path or growth and learning. And it is imperative that we do so. Learn hands-on in this workshop what are the key ingredients to changing minds and fighting misinformation. \n \nSpeaker Name: Michael Czajkowski\, PhD \nSpeaker Bio: \nMichael got their PhD in Physics in 2018 after helping found a science policy graduate student group at Syracuse University. Students who are selected to participate in the annual program are required to complete their projects\, present their work at our annual conference\, and write manuscripts on their projects for publication. \n  \nSince its inception in 2004\, Break the Cycle (BTC) has partnered with over 80 university departments across 21 States in the US\, as well as from 6 countries in Latin America and 2 countries in Africa\, and has supported research for over 200 trainees. Annual BTC trainee projects are published in international journals and a book series on public health.  Alumni of the BTC program rate their mentored research experiences highly and many pursue careers related to their Break the Cycle projects. \n  \n \nSpeaker Name: Kevin Li\, Dr. Leslie Ruben \nSpeaker Bio: \nKevin Li is a senior at Emory University pursuing a major in Chemistry and a minor in Comparative Literature. He co-leads Sprouting Readers\, an after-school literacy program serving disadvantaged communities in Atlanta. Working alongside Eva\, Mica\, and Janet\, Kevin helps integrate reading with STEAM activities\, nutrition education\, and environmental awareness. The program\, established by Joan Wilson\, takes a holistic approach to childhood development\, aiming to improve not only reading skills but also health literacy and long-term wellness outcomes. Inspired by his work with Sprouting Readers\, Kevin plans to attend medical school and explore how narrative medicine can help address systemic health disparities. \n  \nDr. Leslie Rubin\, Break the Cycle Director\, is a Developmental Pediatrician who is originally from South Africa where he trained in Pediatrics and came to the USA in 1976. He was initially in Cleveland Ohio\, then in Boston Massachusetts\, and now in Atlanta Georgia. He is a Developmental Pediatrician at the Morehouse School of Medicine and at Emory University. So we have started on two approaches to that. First is the water testing project mentioned above. Adopt-A-Stream is a state program consisting of volunteers collecting data on the water sources in their neighborhoods and the area around Everett Park along the South River is not represented in this testing project. So we are getting this started\, not just to gather and monitor data\, but to help the community learn about water testing along the way.

Sci4Ga’s Data for Georgia program has developed several story maps in service of various Georgia communities. Learn what we have discovered\, ways to use this information to take action\, and how you can get involved. \n  \nHow much is deforestation causing increased flood risk? \nCould a power plant near you be affecting your health and quality of life? \nIs your community facing health risks due to poor water quality? \n  \nWe have some answers to these important questions. Students in the Quantitative Theory and Methods program have been working under the guidance of Data for Georgia (our data science branch) to answer these questions through the creation of data stories. What’s a data story? That just means a story we are telling you by presenting you with data visualizations. Data you can go home and click around and explore yourself. Pretty cool right?
