Graham is an infectious diseases physician and scientist. He has a BA from Rice University\, MD from the University of Kansas\, and PhD from Vanderbilt University. He retired as Deputy Director of the NIAID Vaccine Research Center in 2021 and is now Professor and Director of the David Satcher Global Health Equity Institute at Morehouse School of Medicine. He is an inventor of vaccines and monoclonal antibodies approved for human use to prevent or treat RSV\, COVID-19\, and Ebola. He has authored >550 scientific publications and is an elected member of the National Academies of Sciences\, Medicine\, and Inventors. He is an inductee of the National Inventors Hall-of-Fame and has received multiple awards for the advancement of science. SUMMARY:Monthly South River Water Testing
DESCRIPTION:Third Sunday of every month \nTime: 10 am \nLocation: Everett Park \nAddress: 5106 Klondike Rd\, Stonecrest\, GA 30038 \nWe will linger in the parking lot for 5-10 minutes before heading down the trail along the water to those first shoals\, where we will be doing our testing and mingling etc…. \nAt our Environmental Justice Forums/Townhalls we heard that people want to know more about what health risks from water and air are in their neighborhoods. So we have started on two approaches to that. First is the water testing project mentioned above. Adopt-A-Stream is a state program consisting of volunteers collecting data on the water sources in their neighborhoods and the area around Everett Park along the South River is not represented in this testing project. So we are getting this started\, not just to gather and monitor data\, but to help the community learn about water testing along the way.

It took countless photography trips deep into the Okefenokee Swamp and other wild places\, alone. It took slowing down and listening. Her work focuses on translating complex energy policy into tools communities can actually use to advocate for themselves and cleaner\, more reliable electricity. \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nRachel Gwaltney\nRachel Gwaltney\, Ed.S.\, is an Academic Designer at McGraw Hill with a background in science education\, public health\, and curriculum development. She taught high school science for five years and later served as a Curriculum and Training Fellow at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Her work focuses on developing engaging\, evidence-based educational resources that support both educators and student learning. \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nDr. Bill Witherspoon\nDr. Bill Witherspoon (video presenter) is producer of the Rock On\, Mother Earth podcast series and co-author of Roadside Geology of Georgia. Since the book appeared in 2013\, Bill has presented more than 100 walks\, talks\, and workshops throughout the state. He completed his PhD at the University of Tennessee in 1981 with a study of the geological structure of the Great Smokies. Bill taught at UT Chattanooga\, then investigated the structure of northeast Alaska and adjacent Canada in the Global Geology section of Shell Development Company. He became a business co-owner and software developer\, then began 17 years as a geoscience educator at Fernbank Science Center\, part of DeKalb County Schools. In 2007\, the National Association of Geoscience Teachers named him Georgia Outstanding Earth Science Teacher. Since retirement in 2014\, Bill has studied climate science\, economics\, and communication at Georgia Tech and Georgia State. His next teaching project will engage several of the experts who mentored and inspired his climate studies in “Conversations on Climate\,” an 8-part series taught onsite in Tucker for the Senior University of Greater Atlanta\, beginning January 17. \n  \nGeorgia Science Junction

Its mission is to improve communication among scientists and the public\, increase public engagement with science\, and advocate for the responsible use of science in public policy. In this role she is spearheading achieving Science for Georgia’s vision and mission. \nPrior to joining Science for Georgia\, she was VP of Product for Prediko\, a start-up that was successfully acquired by United Technologies Corp. Dr. Sharma has worked in many aspects of the engineering field: spearheading the development of the big data vertical and managing a $1M annual Independent Research and Development (IRAD) program at GTRI\, working as an Assistant Professor in Medical Physics at the University of Western Australia\, working as an Assistant Program Manager for the National Science Foundation\, receiving political and outreach training as a AAAS Science and Technology Policy Fellow\, obtaining a PhD in Biomedical Engineering at Duke University\, and designing hardware logic for advanced server microprocessors at IBM. \nDr Sharma enjoys difficult challenges\, jobs with overly long titles\, developing big-picture strategies\, communicating scientific and technical ideas to non-scientists\, sewing\, and smoking various foods. \n  \nGeorgia Science Junction

Water usage is becoming a very pressing issue as Atlanta keeps growing and more data centers and cryptomines that use millions of galleons per day are built all over Georgia. We need that water for agriculture\, industry and everyday public uses. \nWater is the lifeblood of our planet. Throughout history to the present day\, wars have been waged over this precious resource\, and Georgia is no exception. The presentation will provide an overview of conflicts over groundwater resources of Georgia and adjacent South Carolina\, Alabama\, and Florida. This includes saltwater intrusion along the coast\, the Okefenokee Swamp\, groundwater contamination at the Savannah River Site\, and effects of agricultural pumping on streamflow in the Chattahoochee-Flint River Basin. \n  \nIf you missed part one\, you can view the YouTube recording below to catch up. This talk will somewhat reference the previous talk but it will not be needed to understand. \n \nSpeaker Name: John Clarke\, Retired Assistant Director\, USGS Georgia Water Science Center\, Atlanta\, Georgia \nSpeaker Bio: John Clarke retired in January 2014 after a 35-year career with the USGS Georgia Water Science Center. As hydrologist and Assistant Director for Hydrologic Investigations\, he authored or co-authored more than 50 papers on Georgia groundwater and twice served as president of the Georgia Ground Water Association. Notable project work included study of the potential for offsite migration of contaminants at the U.S. Department of Energy’s Savannah River Site; development of a hydrologic overview of Israel\, Jordan\, and Palestinian territories as part of the State Department’s ongoing peace initiative; and design and implementation of the Georgia Coastal Sound Science Initiative—a 7 ½-year\, $14.5 million set of projects commissioned by the Georgia Environmental Protection Division to assess coastal area groundwater resources and address issues of salt-water intrusion and resource sustainability. Not everyone can ride a bike everywhere and gas is getting more expensive and shortages are always possible. But Mopeds (really motor scooters) get around 100 miles per gallon! You can get a moped for cheap and getting a moped is a great way to learn about engines and gain useful knowledge for things like generators and lawnmowers and tractors and motorcycles and other alternative vehicles. And you can get a moped cheap. I recently got 3 mopeds for $200 and I’m going to bring you all along with the process of inspecting them\, diagnosing problems\, and diving in to fix them! Whether you are an aficionado or arachnophobe\, if you are looking for laughs\, facts\, and new spider skills\, this is the presentation for you. \n  \nSpeaker Name: \nErin Ricketts\, MD\nSpeaker Bio: \n\nErin Ricketts is a Medical Officer working in Global Tuberculosis. From 2021-2023 she served in the Epidemic Intelligence Service as a field officer in North Carolina where she played the role of the state Legionella subject matter expert and worked on state and national outbreaks of infectious disease including monkeypox virus\, COVID-19\, highly-pathogenic avian influenza\, pediatric hepatitis\, and varicella. She also played roles in advising residents on rabies exposure guidelines and dragging ticks for Powassan virus. She received her Doctor of Medicine degree in 2018 at Tulane University and completed her residency in Internal Medicine at UC Riverside in 2021 where she co-founded Inland Empire Harm Reduction.\n\nIn her free time Erin is an entomology hobbyist and helps operate the National Spider Support Facebook group and moderate r/spiderbites and r/brownreclusebites on Reddit. She no longer keeps hundreds of venomous spiders for nebulous research projects but has been known to have a captured Latrodectus species at home on occasion.\n\n  \nGeorgia Science Junction

Not everyone can ride a bike everywhere and gas is getting more expensive and shortages are always possible. But Mopeds (really motor scooters) get around 100 miles per gallon! You can get a moped for cheap and getting a moped is a great way to learn about engines and gain useful knowledge for things like generators and lawnmowers and tractors and motorcycles and other alternative vehicles. And you can get a moped cheap. I recently got 3 mopeds for $200 and I’m going to bring you all along with the process of inspecting them\, diagnosing problems\, and diving in to fix them! Come on by its gonna be fun! \nPlease wear warm clothes\, we will be outside with the mopeds quite a bit. \nClimate Survival Training

DESCRIPTION:Date: Sunday\, October 19\, 2025 \nTime: 10 am \nLocation: Everett Park \nAddress: 5106 Klondike Rd\, Stonecrest\, GA 30038 \nWe will linger in the parking lot for 5-10 minutes before heading down the trail along the water to those first shoals\, where we will be doing our testing and mingling etc…. \nThis past year at our Environmental Justice Forums/Townhalls we heard that people want to know more about what health risks from water and air are in their neighborhoods. So we have started on two approaches to that. First is the water testing project mentioned above. Adopt-A-Stream is a state program consisting of volunteers collecting data on the water sources in their neighborhoods and the area around Everett Park along the South River is not represented in this testing project. So we are getting this started\, not just to gather and monitor data\, but to help the community learn about water testing along the way.
