SUMMARY:2025 - Environmental Justice & Climate Protection Conference
DESCRIPTION:Our fourth annual Environmental Justice and Climate Protection Conference! \nThis conference brings together community leaders\, concerned citizens\, elected officials\, academics\, and industry experts to break information silos through information sharing focused on identifying solutions to heal and improve the health and environment of all Georgians. \nAttendees receive solutions-oriented information on the dimensions of environmental health that impact Georgia residents. With sessions on environmental justice impacts\, translating knowledge into action\, and community coalition building\, we discuss\, and more importantly\, actively brainstorm\, what community work can be done right now to move the needle on improving environmental health. \nLearn more here.

SUMMARY:Monthly South River Water Testing - June
DESCRIPTION:Date: Sunday\, June 15\, 2025 \nTime: 10 am \nLocation: Everett Park \nAddress: 5106 Klondike Rd\, Stonecrest\, GA 30038 \nWe will linger in the parking lot for 5-10 minutes before heading down the trail along the water to those first shoals\, where we will be doing our testing and mingling etc…. \nThis past year at our Environmental Justice Forums/Townhalls we heard that people want to know more about what health risks from water and air are in their neighborhoods. So we have started on two approaches to that. First is the water testing project mentioned above. Adopt-A-Stream is a state program consisting of volunteers collecting data on the water sources in their neighborhoods and the area around Everett Park along the South River is not represented in this testing project. So we are getting this started\, not just to gather and monitor data\, but to help the community learn about water testing along the way.

SUMMARY:Climate Survival Training: Essential Bicycle Maintenance
DESCRIPTION:Climate Survival Training: Essential Bicycle Maintenance \nDate:     June 17th \nTime:    6-7:30 pm \nLocation: \nPiedmont Park Community Center \n1071 Piedmont Ave NE\, Atlanta\, GA 30309 \n  \nOn June 17th at 6pm\, we will have a Climate Survival Training about repairing bikes\, led by Benjamin Kasavan from SOPO\, and hosted by Piedmont Park (at their community center location next to Willy’s)  (look for the bright neon PROGRAM arrows). \n  \nWe will be covering basic bike maintenance and repairs that will keep your bicycle running smoothly for longer! Learn routine maintenance\, such as cleaning your chain and making minor brake adjustments\, and learn how to repair a flat tire! Don’t sit in traffic\, plunge into the bliss of bicycles! \n  \nBenjamin first got involved with bicycles at 8 years old racing with Star Track at the Kissenna Park Velodrome in NYC. While he doesn’t race anymore\, he has never stopped biking. Beyond biking around town\, he has been volunteering with DIY bicycle shops since 2015 and has been a shop manager at SOPO Bicycle Cooperative since 2019. He believes that bicycling is a powerful force not only for transportation\, but also for community building\, resilience\, and self-empowerment. \nClimate Survival Training

SUMMARY:GSJ: Fighting Misinformation in Athens
DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, June 26th\, 7-9 pm \nIn-Person \nLocation: Little Kings Shuffle Club\, 223 W Hancock Ave\, Athens\, GA 30601 \nFeatured Speaker: Michael Czajkowski\, PhD\n \nThings Can Be Better: How to Change Minds and Fight Misinformation \n  \nJoin us as we share this important talk with Athens Science Cafe and Coalition of Athens Scientists! This Georgia Science Junction is FREE to all attendees! \n \n  \nThings feel quite scary right now for a lot of us. We face severe threats both on a political level and perhaps also from some members of our own families and communities. And it is because we do not agree\, we do not see the same things. \nBut the title of the talk is true\, things can be a lot better. The people who don’t agree could be seeing so much more of your side of things. We could be bringing far more of the voters in this country along with us on a path or growth and learning. And it is imperative that we do so. Learn hands-on in this workshop what are the key ingredients to changing minds and fighting misinformation. \n \nSpeaker Name: Michael Czajkowski\, PhD \nSpeaker Bio: \nMichael got their PhD in Physics in 2018 after helping found a science policy graduate student group at Syracuse University. As an IGERT fellow\, they received additional training in communication and advocacy in the Falk College Department of Public Health and the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications. Michael moved to Atlanta to work as a postdoc in metamaterial physics at Georgia Tech and has been involved with Science for Georgia for six of those years. Michael is also a volunteer with family education at Decatur Makers\, is a local community organizer\, and was faculty in the 2024 Citizen Science course at Bard College. \n  \nScience of Redistricting
