SUMMARY:Monthly South River Water Testing - May
DESCRIPTION:Date: Sunday\, May 18\, 2025 \nTime: 10 am \nLocation: Everett Park \nAddress: 5106 Klondike Rd\, Stonecrest\, GA 30038 \nWe will linger in the parking lot for 5-10 minutes before heading down the trail along the water to those first shoals\, where we will be doing our testing and mingling etc…. \nThis past year at our Environmental Justice Forums/Townhalls we heard that people want to know more about what health risks from water and air are in their neighborhoods. So we have started on two approaches to that. First is the water testing project mentioned above. Adopt-A-Stream is a state program consisting of volunteers collecting data on the water sources in their neighborhoods and the area around Everett Park along the South River is not represented in this testing project. So we are getting this started\, not just to gather and monitor data\, but to help the community learn about water testing along the way.

Students who are selected to participate in the annual program are required to complete their projects\, present their work at our annual conference\, and write manuscripts on their projects for publication. \n  \nSince its inception in 2004\, Break the Cycle (BTC) has partnered with over 80 university departments across 21 States in the US\, as well as from 6 countries in Latin America and 2 countries in Africa\, and has supported research for over 200 trainees. Annual BTC trainee projects are published in international journals and a book series on public health.  Alumni of the BTC program rate their mentored research experiences highly and many pursue careers related to their Break the Cycle projects. \n  \n \nSpeaker Name: Kevin Li\, Dr. Leslie Ruben \nSpeaker Bio: \nKevin Li is a senior at Emory University pursuing a major in Chemistry and a minor in Comparative Literature. He co-leads Sprouting Readers\, an after-school literacy program serving disadvantaged communities in Atlanta. Working alongside Eva\, Mica\, and Janet\, Kevin helps integrate reading with STEAM activities\, nutrition education\, and environmental awareness. The program\, established by Joan Wilson\, takes a holistic approach to childhood development\, aiming to improve not only reading skills but also health literacy and long-term wellness outcomes. Inspired by his work with Sprouting Readers\, Kevin plans to attend medical school and explore how narrative medicine can help address systemic health disparities. \n  \nDr. Leslie Rubin\, Break the Cycle Director\, is a Developmental Pediatrician who is originally from South Africa where he trained in Pediatrics and came to the USA in 1976. He was initially in Cleveland Ohio\, then in Boston Massachusetts\, and now in Atlanta Georgia. He is a Developmental Pediatrician at the Morehouse School of Medicine and at Emory University. He is dedicated to exploring the social\, economic\, and environmental determinants of health and in 2004 started a program called Break the Cycle of Children’s Environmental Health Disparities to raise awareness among university students about children’s health disparities and to cultivate future leaders. \nCheck out the Event Summary and YouTube stream Here!

SUMMARY:GSJ: Fighting Misinformation in Athens
DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, June 26th\, 7-9 pm \nIn-Person \nLocation: Little Kings Shuffle Club\, 223 W Hancock Ave\, Athens\, GA 30601 \nFeatured Speaker: Michael Czajkowski\, PhD\n \nThings Can Be Better: How to Change Minds and Fight Misinformation \n  \nJoin us as we share this important talk with Athens Science Cafe and Coalition of Athens Scientists! This Georgia Science Junction is FREE to all attendees! \n \n  \nThings feel quite scary right now for a lot of us. We face severe threats both on a political level and perhaps also from some members of our own families and communities. And it is because we do not agree\, we do not see the same things. \nBut the title of the talk is true\, things can be a lot better. The people who don’t agree could be seeing so much more of your side of things. We could be bringing far more of the voters in this country along with us on a path or growth and learning. And it is imperative that we do so. Learn hands-on in this workshop what are the key ingredients to changing minds and fighting misinformation. \n \nSpeaker Name: Michael Czajkowski\, PhD \nSpeaker Bio: \nMichael got their PhD in Physics in 2018 after helping found a science policy graduate student group at Syracuse University. As an IGERT fellow\, they received additional training in communication and advocacy in the Falk College Department of Public Health and the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications. Michael moved to Atlanta to work as a postdoc in metamaterial physics at Georgia Tech and has been involved with Science for Georgia for six of those years. Michael is also a volunteer with family education at Decatur Makers\, is a local community organizer\, and was faculty in the 2024 Citizen Science course at Bard College. \n  \nScience of Redistricting

SUMMARY:Monthly South River Water Testing - August
DESCRIPTION:Date: Sunday\, August 17\, 2025 \nTime: 10 am \nLocation: Everett Park \nAddress: 5106 Klondike Rd\, Stonecrest\, GA 30038 \nWe will linger in the parking lot for 5-10 minutes before heading down the trail along the water to those first shoals\, where we will be doing our testing and mingling etc….

SUMMARY:GSJ: Indoor Mushroom Cultivation: Domesticating a Hidden Kingdom
DESCRIPTION:Indoor Mushroom Cultivation: Domesticating a Hidden Kingdom \nTuesday\, August 26th\, 7-9 pm \nIn-Person and Streaming \nLocation: Mutation Brewing Company\, 5825 Roswell Rd NE\, Sandy Springs\, GA 30328\, in their Speakeasy. \nFeatured Speaker: Kyle Gabriel\, Ph.D. \n  \nAccessible mushroom cultivation can foster stronger communities and a more sustainable food system. Whether you’re a hobbyist or a commercial grower\, our goal is to simplify the growing process\, increase yields\, and unlock the incredible potential of fungi. MycoLogic committed to advancing the art and science of cultivation while making it accessible to all. \nDriven by a commitment to sustainable and community-focused agriculture\, they collaborate with local Georgia growers like Gowin Valley Farms\, Ellijay Mushrooms\, 4Fungi’s\, and Greenbox Mushrooms\, providing them with the tools and knowledge to thrive. Their team of experts in microbiology\, agriculture\, engineering\, and business is dedicated to empowering growers with affordable\, effective cultivation systems. \nJoin us as Kyle Gabriel teaches us their science behind their work and how you can apply this knowledge in the home. \n\n \nSpeaker Name: \nKyle Gabriel\, Ph.D.\, Co-Founder and CEO of MycoLogic.\nSpeaker Bio: \nMycoLogic was born from a lifelong fascination with fungi\, dating back to co-founder Kyle Gabriel’s teenage years. By his early twenties\, he was deeply immersed in the world of mushrooms\, experimenting with wild foraging in South Florida\, yeast cultivation for brewing\, and even developing early prototypes for automated indoor growing systems. His academic journey\, culminating in a Ph.D. in Applied and Environmental Microbiology from Georgia State University\, further deepened his understanding of fungal biology. It was at GSU where he met fellow graduate student Chris Cornelison\, who would later become his co-founder\, and shared a similar passion for mycology. While his graduate research explored the complexities of fungal biology\, focusing on areas like fungal pathogens and brewing science\, it solidified his belief in the immense potential of mushrooms. \nAfter graduating and joining Kennesaw State University in 2017\, Dr. Gabriel\, along with fellow researcher Dr. Cornelison\, saw a critical need for accessible and effective growing solutions for cultivators of all levels. They began pursuing mushroom-related research in Dr. Cornelison’s Bioinnovation Laboratory at KSU. With support from grants awarded by the Georgia Department of Agriculture and the Georgia Research Alliance\, they further developed their technologies and gained a deeper understanding of the mushroom market. This culminated in the founding of MycoLogic in 2021. \nIndoor Mushroom Cultivation

SUMMARY:Things Can Be Better: How to Change Minds and Stop Propaganda
DESCRIPTION:Sunday\, September 28th\, 2-3pm \nIn-Person \nLocation: Charis Books & More\, 184 S. Candler St.\, Decatur\, GA 30030 \nFeatured Speaker: Michael Czajkowski\, PhD\n \nThings Can Be Better: How to Change Minds and Stop Propaganda \n  \nJoin us as we share this important talk with Charis Books & More! This Talk is FREE to all attendees! \n \n  \nThis event takes place in person at Charis and on Crowdcast\, Charis’ virtual event platform. This event is free\, but registration is required for virtual attendance. Click here to register to attend virtually. Please read the in-person event guidelines to be sure you can participate in the event. \n  \nCharis welcomes Michael Czajkowski for Things Can Be Better: How to Change Minds and Stop Propaganda\, a workshop around propaganda\, misinformation\, and offering hope and skills for a way forward. \nWorkshop Description \nI feel vulnerable. Everyday I feel strained and uncertain about my future and safety due to current events. Maybe you do too. To make real progress seems to require the changing of so many minds that feel so close yet so far away. This might feel bleak to you\, but I feel hope about this. Based in science. This workshop is to spread this hope. \nI will review the lesser-known and yet most powerful challenges to the progress of society\, which will be difficult to face. We will then go through a large-scale strategy which turns these challenges into advantages. Finally\, core to this strategy is a lesser known set of interpersonal communication habits\, which we will practice together. \n  \nThe event is free and open to all people\, especially to those who have no income or low income\, but we encourage and appreciate a donation of $5-20 in support of the work of Charis Circle\, our programming non-profit. Charis Circle’s mission is to foster sustainable feminist communities\, work for social justice\, and encourage the expression of diverse and marginalized voices. Donate on Crowdcast or via their website. \n  \n \nWorkshop Facilitator: Michael Czajkowski\, PhD \nMichael Czajkowski is the Director of Advocacy for the nonprofit Science for Georgia working on community science translation projects to support community autonomy\, awareness of environmental health threats\, and resistance against more general forms of misinformation and manipulation. They have diverse experiences working in art\, science\, facilitation\, community organizing and many different levels of education\, which is hopefully leading to useful new insights and perspectives. Michael’s background in soft matter physics is not so relevant to this\, but is pretty fun and they love to talk about it. \n
