DESCRIPTION:Date: Sunday\, March 16\, 2025 \nTime: 10 am \nLocation: Everett Park \nAddress: 5106 Klondike Rd\, Stonecrest\, GA 30038 \nWe will linger in the parking lot for 5-10 minutes before heading down the trail along the water to those first shoals\, where we will be doing our testing and mingling etc…. \nThis past year at our Environmental Justice Forums/Townhalls we heard that people want to know more about what health risks from water and air are in their neighborhoods. So we have started on two approaches to that. First is the water testing project mentioned above. Adopt-A-Stream is a state program consisting of volunteers collecting data on the water sources in their neighborhoods and the area around Everett Park along the South River is not represented in this testing project. So we are getting this started\, not just to gather and monitor data\, but to help the community learn about water testing along the way.

Sci4Ga’s Data for Georgia program has developed several story maps in service of various Georgia communities. Learn what we have discovered\, ways to use this information to take action\, and how you can get involved. \n  \nHow much is deforestation causing increased flood risk? \nCould a power plant near you be affecting your health and quality of life? \nIs your community facing health risks due to poor water quality? \n  \nWe have some answers to these important questions. Students in the Quantitative Theory and Methods program have been working under the guidance of Data for Georgia (our data science branch) to answer these questions through the creation of data stories. So we have started on two approaches to that. First is the water testing project mentioned above. Adopt-A-Stream is a state program consisting of volunteers collecting data on the water sources in their neighborhoods and the area around Everett Park along the South River is not represented in this testing project. So we are getting this started\, not just to gather and monitor data\, but to help the community learn about water testing along the way.

DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, May 22nd\, 7-9 pm \nIn-Person and Streaming \nLocation: Wild Heaven West End\, 1010 White St SW\, Atlanta\, GA 30310 \nFeatured Speaker: Break The Cycle Speakers – \n\nDr. Leslie Ruben\nKevin Li\n\n \nThe Annual Break the Cycle of Children’s Environmental Health Disparities Program (BTC) supports an interdisciplinary set of student-driven research projects that explore the social\, economic\, and environmental factors that adversely affect children’s health and well-being and generate creative strategies to mitigate or reverse those adverse factors and provide the children with greater opportunities for a healthier\, more secure\, and brighter future for themselves and for their children. Students who are selected to participate in the annual program are required to complete their projects\, present their work at our annual conference\, and write manuscripts on their projects for publication. \n  \nSince its inception in 2004\, Break the Cycle (BTC) has partnered with over 80 university departments across 21 States in the US\, as well as from 6 countries in Latin America and 2 countries in Africa\, and has supported research for over 200 trainees. Annual BTC trainee projects are published in international journals and a book series on public health.  Alumni of the BTC program rate their mentored research experiences highly and many pursue careers related to their Break the Cycle projects. \n  \n \nSpeaker Name: Kevin Li\, Dr. Leslie Ruben \nSpeaker Bio: \nKevin Li is a senior at Emory University pursuing a major in Chemistry and a minor in Comparative Literature. He co-leads Sprouting Readers\, an after-school literacy program serving disadvantaged communities in Atlanta. Working alongside Eva\, Mica\, and Janet\, Kevin helps integrate reading with STEAM activities\, nutrition education\, and environmental awareness. The program\, established by Joan Wilson\, takes a holistic approach to childhood development\, aiming to improve not only reading skills but also health literacy and long-term wellness outcomes. Inspired by his work with Sprouting Readers\, Kevin plans to attend medical school and explore how narrative medicine can help address systemic health disparities. \n  \nDr. Leslie Rubin\, Break the Cycle Director\, is a Developmental Pediatrician who is originally from South Africa where he trained in Pediatrics and came to the USA in 1976. He was initially in Cleveland Ohio\, then in Boston Massachusetts\, and now in Atlanta Georgia. He is a Developmental Pediatrician at the Morehouse School of Medicine and at Emory University. Learn routine maintenance\, such as cleaning your chain and making minor brake adjustments\, and learn how to repair a flat tire! Don’t sit in traffic\, plunge into the bliss of bicycles! \n  \nBenjamin first got involved with bicycles at 8 years old racing with Star Track at the Kissenna Park Velodrome in NYC. While he doesn’t race anymore\, he has never stopped biking. Beyond biking around town\, he has been volunteering with DIY bicycle shops since 2015 and has been a shop manager at SOPO Bicycle Cooperative since 2019. We face severe threats both on a political level and perhaps also from some members of our own families and communities. And it is because we do not agree\, we do not see the same things. \nBut the title of the talk is true\, things can be a lot better. The people who don’t agree could be seeing so much more of your side of things. We could be bringing far more of the voters in this country along with us on a path or growth and learning. And it is imperative that we do so. Learn hands-on in this workshop what are the key ingredients to changing minds and fighting misinformation. \n \nSpeaker Name: Michael Czajkowski\, PhD \nSpeaker Bio: \nMichael got their PhD in Physics in 2018 after helping found a science policy graduate student group at Syracuse University. As an IGERT fellow\, they received additional training in communication and advocacy in the Falk College Department of Public Health and the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications. Michael moved to Atlanta to work as a postdoc in metamaterial physics at Georgia Tech and has been involved with Science for Georgia for six of those years.
