SUMMARY:Monthly South River Water Testing
DESCRIPTION:Date: Sunday\, November 16th \nTime: 10 am \nLocation: Everett Park \nAddress: 5106 Klondike Rd\, Stonecrest\, GA 30038 \nWe will linger in the parking lot for 5-10 minutes before heading down the trail along the water to those first shoals\, where we will be doing our testing and mingling etc…. \nThis past year at our Environmental Justice Forums/Townhalls we heard that people want to know more about what health risks from water and air are in their neighborhoods. So we have started on two approaches to that. First is the water testing project mentioned above. Adopt-A-Stream is a state program consisting of volunteers collecting data on the water sources in their neighborhoods and the area around Everett Park along the South River is not represented in this testing project. So we are getting this started\, not just to gather and monitor data\, but to help the community learn about water testing along the way.

SUMMARY:Georgia Science Junction - How Psychedelics Affect the Mind
DESCRIPTION:Friday\, November 22nd\, 7-9 pm \nIn-Person and Streaming \nLocation: Wild Heaven Brewing\, West End – 1010 White St SW\, Atlanta\, GA 30310 \nFeatured Speaker: Bradley Cooke\, PhD\n \nChaos to New Order: How Psychedelics Affect the Mind – 2024 Update \nFor decades\, strict drug laws rendered practically impossible research on psychedelic drugs such as psilocybin and lysergic acid. Recent years\, however\, have seen an explosion of studies into these substances and their effects at nearly every level of analysis—from the workings of brain cells to the behavior of lab animals to patients suffering from debilitating anxiety\, PTSD\, and depression. The effects of psychedelic drugs are just beginning to be explored by basic research and there is much we do not understand. However\, when viewed through the framework of a new theory of brain function—termed the “predictive processing model”—their effects offer new insight to one of the greatest mysteries of science: Consciousness. The model says that consciousness is as much about the brain’s best guess about the world as it is about the patterns of energy received by our senses. Cognitive neuroscientist Bradley Cooke will discuss recent research findings\, interpret the effects of psychedelics on consciousness\, and look at what value such substances hold for psychotherapy. \nAbout Our Speaker:    \n \nBradley Cooke has been a neuroscientist for more than 20 years. He received his Ph.D. from UC Berkeley in 2000 and completed a postdoctoral fellowship at Northwestern University before being appointed at Georgia State\, where he was promoted to associate professor before leaving to work in public service. He is now an official at the National Institutes of Health\, where he oversees the nation’s portfolio of research focused on the neurobiology of obesity and metabolic disease.   \n  \n  \nGSJ Nov

SUMMARY:CST: Mopeds are Cheap and Fun and you can do it too!
DESCRIPTION:Mopeds are Cheap and Fun and you can do it too! \nDate: December 15th\, 2024 \nTime: 12 noon \nLocation: South River Art Studios 1300 Fleetwood Dr SE\, Atlanta\, GA 30316 \nParking: ample and free \nSurvival and sustainability go hand in hand. Not everyone can ride a bike everywhere and gas is getting more expensive and shortages are always possible. But Mopeds (really motor scooters) get around 100 miles per gallon! You can get a moped for cheap and getting a moped is a great way to learn about engines and gain useful knowledge for things like generators and lawnmowers and tractors and motorcycles and other alternative vehicles. And you can get a moped cheap. I recently got 3 mopeds for $200 and I’m going to bring you all along with the process of inspecting them\, diagnosing problems\, and diving in to fix them! Come on by its gonna be fun! \nPlease wear warm clothes\, we will be outside with the mopeds quite a bit. \nAlso\, we will stick around after to have a bit of an educational meeting about the future of Climate Survival Trainings\, so don’t miss that! \nClimate Survival Training

SUMMARY:CST: Red Wiggler Wrangling - DIY Worm Farming
DESCRIPTION:Red Wiggler Wrangling – DIY Worm Farming!\nPostponed due to Inclement weather – New date Saturday\, February 15th\nSaturday\, February 15\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n11:00am – 1:30pm\nSalem-Panola Library\n\n\n\n\n\n\n5137 Salem Rd\, Stonecrest\, GA 30038 \nA hands on vermiculture workshop by Science for Georgia. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nWant to make friends with Earth’s most benevolent creature? RSVP to claim one of 20 worm farm kits at this dual lecture/interactive workshop! Worm farming\, or vermiculture\, is a method of composting using specific species of worms that can transform scraps into nutrients three times as fast as your average compost pile while requiring even less maintenance. The species we will be focusing on\, colloquially known as the Red Wiggler\, are exceptionally resilient and well suited to live undetected inside your home or out. \nVermiculture makes a rewarding hobby\, connects us with nature\, and teaches valuable lessons about a circular economy. If you are looking to reduce your carbon footprint\, purify your soil\, protect your crops\, reduce dependence on chemical fertilizers\, or just ground yourself with the rhythms of life\, look no further than the RSVP button below! \nWe will begin the session with some scientific context on the significance of these humble invertebrates and their effect on soil and environmental health\, learn tips about re-using & recycling material\, and learn how to make choices for your worms based on your outcome goals. Next\, our resourceful volunteers will lead us through manipulating 5-gallon buckets with power tools for a suitable dwelling fit for a Red Wiggler. \nBring a friend or family member\, let’s roll up our sleeves\, and dig deep into the science and methods of maintaining a healthy environment for your new clean up crew\, the Red Wiggler worms! \nPlease note: attendees MUST come to this CST in closed-toe shoes and clothes you are comfortable working in or getting a little messy. If you would like to bring your own containers (to better fit your space)\, please indicate so on the sign-up form. We encourage attendees to bring your own materials (power drills\, sandpaper\, eye protection\, etc) if you would like to reduce your waiting time. Please bring extra towels or tarps if you are worried about transporting your system home. \n  \nWant to bring your own containers? Use the guide below to help you find containers suitable for your space!  \n \n \n\n\n  \nClimate Survival Training

DESCRIPTION:Date: Sunday\, Feb 16\, 2025 \nTime: 10 am \nLocation: Everett Park \nAddress: 5106 Klondike Rd\, Stonecrest\, GA 30038 \nWe will linger in the parking lot for 5-10 minutes before heading down the trail along the water to those first shoals\, where we will be doing our testing and mingling etc….

SUMMARY:GSJ: Fighting Misinformation
DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, February 20th\, 7-9 pm \nIn-Person and Streaming \nLocation: Manuel’s Tavern \nFeatured Speaker: Michael Czajkowski\, PhD\n \nThings can be better: How to change minds and fight misinformation \n  \nThings feel quite scary right now for a lot of us. We face severe threats both on a political level and perhaps also from some members of our own families and communities. And it is because we do not agree\, we do not see the same things. \nBut the title of the talk is true\, things can be a lot better. The people who don’t agree could be seeing so much more of your side of things. We could be bringing far more of the voters in this country along with us on a path or growth and learning. And it is imperative that we do so. Learn hands-on in this workshop what are the key ingredients to changing minds and fighting misinformation. \n \nSpeaker Name: Michael Czajkowski \nSpeaker Bio: \nMichael got their PhD in Physics in 2018 after helping found a science policy graduate student group at Syracuse University. As an IGERT fellow\, they received additional training in communication and advocacy in the Falk College Department of Public Health and the S. I. Newhouse School of Public Communications. Michael moved to Atlanta to work as a postdoc in metamaterial physics at Georgia Tech and has been involved with Science for Georgia for six of those years. Michael is also a volunteer with family education at Decatur Makers\, is a local community organizer\, and was faculty in the 2024 Citizen Science course at Bard College. \n  \nScience of Redistricting
