How does voting in political races differ from the way college teams are ranked or how the Oscars are awarded? And how can a business\, city\, or state choose among multiple candidates for a program without a costly and time-consuming runoff procedure? DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=””] \nOnline and In-person \nGeorgia Institute of Technology in partnership with the Sierra Club in Georgia released an energy burden report highlighting the oversized financial burden Black households face in Georgia. \nThe report shows how Black households in Georgia face disproportionately high energy burdens\, including historic discrimination and disinvestment in infrastructure. The report goes a step further than similar studies by conducting surveys of energy-burdened households to find out what other consequences they face when they spend a significant portion of their income on energy bills. \nGA WAND and Brown & Associates have developed a workshop on how changes in policy change your rates. Join us to learn why the current practice is so very hungry and about new algorithms that can provide the same\, or better\, computation at a fraction of the power usage. \n  \n\n\n\n\nMore About Our Speakers: \nVijay Madisetti\, Fellow IEEE\, AIIA\, Professor @ Georgia Tech\, Cybersecurity and Privacy (SCP)\, College of Computing.\n\n\n\n\n\nVijay Madisetti earned a Bachelor of Technology (Honors) degree from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT)\, Kharagpur\, India\, in Electronics and Electrical Communications Engineering in 1984. Following this\, he went to the University of California at Berkeley where he earned a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences in 1989. \nDr. Madisetti joined the ECE faculty at Georgia Tech in 1989. He leads several research and educational programs at Georgia Tech in the area of digital signal processing\, embedded computing systems\, chip design\, wireless and telecom systems\, and systems engineering. He has authored or edited several books\, including VLSI Digital Signal Processors (1995) and the Digital Signal Processing Handbook (Second Edition\, 2010). He is also a frequent consultant to the industry. \nDr. Madisetti is a Fellow of the IEEE and was awarded the 2006 Frederick Emmons Terman Medal by the American Society of Engineering Education (ASEE) and HP Corporations for his contributions to electrical engineering. He is currently serving on several campus initiatives\, and is the Executive Director of Georgia Tech’s India Initiative. Dr. Madisetti also received the Georgia Tech Doctoral Thesis Advisor Award from Georgia Tech in 2001. \n\n\n\nXiao Huang\, Ph.D.\, Assistant Professor\, Department of Environmental Sciences\, Emory University \n\n\n\nDr. Huang’s research primarily focuses on human-environment interaction\, computational social sciences\, vulnerability and resilience\, urban informatics\, disaster mapping and mitigation\, GeoAI and deep learning\, and disaster remote sensing. Different from traditional geospatial analysis\, his research takes advantage of rapidly growing data availability through the utilization of emerging\, innovative data sources and the development of advanced geospatial analytical techniques to address existing/future challenges in disaster studies (e.g.\, real-time monitoring\, assessment\, and mitigation) and human society (e.g.\, human behaviors\, vulnerability\, and inequity) from Big Data and spatiotemporal perspectives. Patterson St.\nValdosta\, GA 31601 \nWhat is the Fibonnaci Sequence\, and how does it relate to Leonardo da Vinci’s Vitruvian Man?  And how can a pine cone help us understand the golden ratio?  Enjoy an evening of art and observation as Valdosta State University art and math professors walk us through the intersection of art and math\, and teach us the inspiring power of observation.  Then take a moment to reflect while enjoying the art throughout the Turner Center’s exhibits.  We will also watch clips from the new Ken Burns documentary\, Leonardo da Vinci.  In partnership with Science for Georgia\, Valdosta State University\, and the Annette Howell Turner Center for the Arts. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister Here

DESCRIPTION:Date: Sunday\, November 16th \nTime: 10 am \nLocation: Everett Park \nAddress: 5106 Klondike Rd\, Stonecrest\, GA 30038 \nWe will linger in the parking lot for 5-10 minutes before heading down the trail along the water to those first shoals\, where we will be doing our testing and mingling etc…. \nThis past year at our Environmental Justice Forums/Townhalls we heard that people want to know more about what health risks from water and air are in their neighborhoods. So we have started on two approaches to that. First is the water testing project mentioned above. Adopt-A-Stream is a state program consisting of volunteers collecting data on the water sources in their neighborhoods and the area around Everett Park along the South River is not represented in this testing project. So we are getting this started\, not just to gather and monitor data\, but to help the community learn about water testing along the way.

SUMMARY:Forensic Microscopy Murder Mystery
DESCRIPTION:This is a limited attendance event! There are only 15 spots available for this unique experience. \nDate: Saturday\, Nov 16th \nTime: 10am to 1:30pm \nLocation: MVA Scientific Consultants\, 3300 Breckinridge Blvd # 400\, Duluth\, GA 30096 \nClass size: 15 people (limited number of scopes) \n  \nCrime story: Someone broke in and left brownies. The victim’s sweet tooth is their main weakness\, so they ate them without any questions. They died doing what they loved from poison (their other weakness) in the brownies. \nSummary of event: \nA murder most fowl has occurred! It was death by chocolate from poisoned brownies\, which the victim could not resist. Microscopes can crack the case! \nJoin Georgia Microscopical Society (GMS) at the crime scene and microscopes to determine the which suspect is guilty. Learn from forensic microscopist how to collect\, prepare\, and analyze the evidence. You will examine trace evidence like hair\, fibers\, dust and (dun\, dun\, duuun!) poison to identify and compare to suspects using a range of microscopy methods from polarized light microcopy to microchemical test. Murders are no match against a skilled microscopist! \nThis Event will be hosted by MVA Scientific Consultants\, a microscopy lab\, and will be on Saturday November 16th starting at 10:00 am.  Free brownies are included (eat at your own risk). \n  \nScience of Redistricting
