SUMMARY:CST: Mopeds are Cheap and Fun and you can do it too! - RESCHEDULE
DESCRIPTION:Mopeds are Cheap and Fun and you can do it too! \nDate: Nov 9th\, 2025 \nTime: 6pm \nLocation: South River Art Studios 1300 Fleetwood Dr SE\, Atlanta\, GA 30316 \nParking: ample and free \nSunday Nov 9th\, we will be back down at South River Art Studios for the Rescheduled mopeds course. Still got two mopeds in pieces\, so come look and learn! We will cover even more than last time! \nSurvival and sustainability go hand in hand. Not everyone can ride a bike everywhere and gas is getting more expensive and shortages are always possible. But Mopeds (really motor scooters) get around 100 miles per gallon! You can get a moped for cheap and getting a moped is a great way to learn about engines and gain useful knowledge for things like generators and lawnmowers and tractors and motorcycles and other alternative vehicles. And you can get a moped cheap. I recently got 3 mopeds for $200 and I’m going to bring you all along with the process of inspecting them\, diagnosing problems\, and diving in to fix them! Come on by its gonna be fun! \nPlease wear warm clothes\, we will be outside with the mopeds quite a bit. \nClimate Survival Training

SUMMARY:Unearthing Farm Soil Restoration- A Plant Salvaging Event
DESCRIPTION:Sat\, Nov 15th – Sun\, Nov 16th\, 2025\n12 PM – 5 PM\nSHIFTS\nShift 1\nSat\, Nov 15th\, 2025\n12 PM – 5 PM \nShift 2\nSun\, Nov 16th\, 2025\n12 PM – 5 PM \nLocation: Unearthing Farm & Market: 1534 Memorial Drive Southeast\, Atlanta\, GA \nPlease Register Here and let us know you are coming \n  \n\nAbout the event\n\nWith the recent soil testing at Unearthing Farm and market\, which has revealed elevated lead levels prompting them to pause many activities and programs at the farm. \nThis setback is significant\, but their mission to create healthy\, inclusive food access for Atlanta remains unwavering. To continue their work in community building and food distribution\, they had to explore potential remediation strategies. \nOne of those strategies is that Unearthing Farm is working towards total soil restoration\, requiring an excavation of the land. They are in the process of planning a two day event to salvage plants and trees that are essential to the farm’s mission. \nTogether they aim to cultivate a vibrate community green space through a hyper local farm and market. \n\n\n\nWhat will volunteers do?\n\nVolunteers will support the farm by supporting the salvaging of trees and plants before the excavation of the land begins. \nUnearthing Farm needs support with pruning\, trimming and repotting plants into their temporary home. A workshop will happen before the repotting begins to show volunteers the most supportive way to transition the plants and trees. \n\n\n\nWhat will volunteers need to bring or wear?\n\nPlease wear long sleeve\, pants and close toed shoes. PPE (masks\, booties and gloves) will be provided to everyone during this event and we asks that all volunteers utilizes what’s provided.

SUMMARY:Monthly South River Water Testing - November
DESCRIPTION:Date: Sunday\, November 16\, 2025 \nTime: 10 am \nLocation: Everett Park \nAddress: 5106 Klondike Rd\, Stonecrest\, GA 30038 \nWe will linger in the parking lot for 5-10 minutes before heading down the trail along the water to those first shoals\, where we will be doing our testing and mingling etc…. \nThis past year at our Environmental Justice Forums/Townhalls we heard that people want to know more about what health risks from water and air are in their neighborhoods. So we have started on two approaches to that. First is the water testing project mentioned above. Adopt-A-Stream is a state program consisting of volunteers collecting data on the water sources in their neighborhoods and the area around Everett Park along the South River is not represented in this testing project. So we are getting this started\, not just to gather and monitor data\, but to help the community learn about water testing along the way.

SUMMARY:Monthly South River Water Testing - December
DESCRIPTION:Date: Sunday\, December 21\, 2025 – This date is tentative \nTime: 10 am \nLocation: Everett Park \nAddress: 5106 Klondike Rd\, Stonecrest\, GA 30038 \nWe will linger in the parking lot for 5-10 minutes before heading down the trail along the water to those first shoals\, where we will be doing our testing and mingling etc….

SUMMARY:GSJ: Natural Gas Pipeline Extension
DESCRIPTION:Natural Gas Pipeline Extension \nWednesday\, January 21st\, 7-8:30 pm \nIn-Person and Streaming \nLocation: Lokos Tacos- Boy Scout Rd – 235 Boy Scout Rd\, Augusta\, GA 30909 \nFeatured Speaker: Sci4Ga Data Team \nclick here to access the live stream \nDid you know that there is a proposed expansion of a gas pipeline that runs throughout the south\, and runs through Georgia from Columbus to Augusta? \nWhile this isn’t a “new” pipeline\, expansion means tearing up neighboring land with construction equipment\, larger and/or new compressor stations\, and overall community disruptions. This will have impacts on the health and safety of those near the pipeline\, and most-likely raise the energy bills of customers across the state of Georgia.\nSo yes – this is related to your power bills and to data centers. \nScience for Georgia and partners have been working together to map the impact of the proposed expansion. Come learn more about what’s in the path of the pipeline\, what it means for you\, and how you can use our interactive map to learn more. \n \nSpeaker Names: \nSci4Ga Data Team – Amy Sharma\, PhD\, Executive Director of Sci4Ga and Jessica Owens\, Data for Georgia\nSpeaker Bios: \n \nAmy Sharma\, PhD – \nAmy Sharma\, PhD\, is the Executive Director of Science for Georgia. Her career has spanned across industry\, academia\, and government. She was VP of Product for Prediko\, a start-up that was successfully acquired by United Technologies Corp. She spearheaded the development of the big data vertical at GTRI\, was an Assistant Professor in Medical Physics at the University of Western Australia\, an Assistant Program Manager for the National Science Foundation\, a AAAS Science and Technology Policy Fellow. Early in her career she worked on microprocessors for IBM.\n\nDr Sharma’s PhD is in Biomedical Engineering from Duke University. She enjoys difficult challenges\, jobs with overly long titles\, developing big-picture strategies\, communicating scientific and technical ideas to non-scientists\, performing science stand-up comedy\, sewing\, and smoking various foods.\n\n\nJessica Owens – \n\nJessica is a graduate of KSU with a BA in Geography and a Certificate in GIS. Her projects focus on the spatial implications of development on communities and water resources. In her spare time\, she volunteers for the Yellow River Water Trail and is a Director on the Mountain Park Community Association with the hope of supporting residents in building a healthier more resilient future. \n\n\n  \nGeorgia Science Junction

SUMMARY:GSJ: Georgia Water Wars\, Pt 2 - Georgia's Groundwater
DESCRIPTION:Georgia Water Wars—Conflicts over our most precious resource\, Part 2—Groundwater \nThurs\, Feb 26th\, 7-8:30 pm \nIn-Person and Streaming \nStream it here :  \nLocation: Manuel’s Tavern\, 602 N Highland Ave NE\, Atlanta\, GA 30307 \nFeatured Speaker: John Clarke \nJoin John Clarke for the second in our Georgia Water Wars series. Water usage is becoming a very pressing issue as Atlanta keeps growing and more data centers and cryptomines that use millions of galleons per day are built all over Georgia. We need that water for agriculture\, industry and everyday public uses. \nWater is the lifeblood of our planet. Throughout history to the present day\, wars have been waged over this precious resource\, and Georgia is no exception. The presentation will provide an overview of conflicts over groundwater resources of Georgia and adjacent South Carolina\, Alabama\, and Florida. This includes saltwater intrusion along the coast\, the Okefenokee Swamp\, groundwater contamination at the Savannah River Site\, and effects of agricultural pumping on streamflow in the Chattahoochee-Flint River Basin. \n  \nIf you missed part one\, you can view the YouTube recording below to catch up. This talk will somewhat reference the previous talk but it will not be needed to understand. \n \nSpeaker Name: John Clarke\, Retired Assistant Director\, USGS Georgia Water Science Center\, Atlanta\, Georgia \nSpeaker Bio: John Clarke retired in January 2014 after a 35-year career with the USGS Georgia Water Science Center. As hydrologist and Assistant Director for Hydrologic Investigations\, he authored or co-authored more than 50 papers on Georgia groundwater and twice served as president of the Georgia Ground Water Association. Notable project work included study of the potential for offsite migration of contaminants at the U.S. Department of Energy’s Savannah River Site; development of a hydrologic overview of Israel\, Jordan\, and Palestinian territories as part of the State Department’s ongoing peace initiative; and design and implementation of the Georgia Coastal Sound Science Initiative—a 7 ½-year\, $14.5 million set of projects commissioned by the Georgia Environmental Protection Division to assess coastal area groundwater resources and address issues of salt-water intrusion and resource sustainability. John is a certified groundwater professional and received a BS Degree in Earth Sciences from the State University of New York at Brockport. \nGeorgia Science Junction
