We will discuss effective advocacy communication strategy and provide an overview of upcoming things you can do to advocate for change. \n \nSpeaker Name: Amy Sharma\, PhD \nSpeaker Bio: \nAmy Sharma\, PhD\, is the Executive Director of Science for Georgia\, a non-profit dedicated to engaging scientists and the community in productive dialogue. Its mission is to improve communication among scientists and the public\, increase public engagement with science\, and advocate for the responsible use of science in public policy. In this role she is spearheading achieving Science for Georgia’s vision and mission. \nPrior to joining Science for Georgia\, she was VP of Product for Prediko\, a start-up that was successfully acquired by United Technologies Corp. Dr. Sharma has worked in many aspects of the engineering field: spearheading the development of the big data vertical and managing a $1M annual Independent Research and Development (IRAD) program at GTRI\, working as an Assistant Professor in Medical Physics at the University of Western Australia\, working as an Assistant Program Manager for the National Science Foundation\, receiving political and outreach training as a AAAS Science and Technology Policy Fellow\, obtaining a PhD in Biomedical Engineering at Duke University\, and designing hardware logic for advanced server microprocessors at IBM. \nDr Sharma enjoys difficult challenges\, jobs with overly long titles\, developing big-picture strategies\, communicating scientific and technical ideas to non-scientists\, sewing\, and smoking various foods. \n  \nScience Speaks

We face severe threats both on a political level and perhaps also from some members of our own families and communities. And it is because we do not agree\, we do not see the same things. \nBut the title of the talk is true\, things can be a lot better. The people who don’t agree could be seeing so much more of your side of things. We could be bringing far more of the voters in this country along with us on a path or growth and learning. And it is imperative that we do so. Learn hands-on in this workshop what are the key ingredients to changing minds and fighting misinformation. \n \nSpeaker Name: Michael Czajkowski\, PhD \nSpeaker Bio: \nMichael got their PhD in Physics in 2018 after helping found a science policy graduate student group at Syracuse University. As an IGERT fellow\, they received additional training in communication and advocacy in the Falk College Department of Public Health and the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications. Michael moved to Atlanta to work as a postdoc in metamaterial physics at Georgia Tech and has been involved with Science for Georgia for six of those years. Michael is also a volunteer with family education at Decatur Makers\, is a local community organizer\, and was faculty in the 2024 Citizen Science course at Bard College. \n  \nScience of Redistricting

DESCRIPTION:This is a limited attendance event! There are only 15 spots available for this unique experience. \nDate: Saturday\, Nov 16th \nTime: 10am to 1:30pm \nLocation: MVA Scientific Consultants\, 3300 Breckinridge Blvd # 400\, Duluth\, GA 30096 \nClass size: 15 people (limited number of scopes) \n  \nCrime story: Someone broke in and left brownies. The victim’s sweet tooth is their main weakness\, so they ate them without any questions. They died doing what they loved from poison (their other weakness) in the brownies. \nSummary of event: \nA murder most fowl has occurred! It was death by chocolate from poisoned brownies\, which the victim could not resist. Microscopes can crack the case! \nJoin Georgia Microscopical Society (GMS) at the crime scene and microscopes to determine the which suspect is guilty. Learn from forensic microscopist how to collect\, prepare\, and analyze the evidence. You will examine trace evidence like hair\, fibers\, dust and (dun\, dun\, duuun!) poison to identify and compare to suspects using a range of microscopy methods from polarized light microcopy to microchemical test. Ask at the Bar if the door is closed. \nWhy is it so hard for third-party candidates to win modern elections? How does voting in political races differ from the way college teams are ranked or how the Oscars are awarded? And how can a business\, city\, or state choose among multiple candidates for a program without a costly and time-consuming runoff procedure? The answers to these questions can be found in understanding concepts from Ranked Choice Voting and Game Theory\, a branch of mathematics devoted to interactive decisions.   \nIf you’ve heard phrases like “win-win” and “zero-sum” or seen movies like “The Dark Knight” and “A Beautiful Mind”\, you’ve already been exposed to ideas from game theory. Much more information about the health threats present is needed. While our data science branch continues to collect and examine information from many public data resources\, it is clear that more testing will be needed. We cannot wait around for governmental agencies to do this testing for us\, we must take this issue into our own hands with community testing. \nThis training is the first step in developing a data gathering community project that can generate a well-researched set of knowledge and tools to continue with advocacy for the well being of South DeKalb.
