By his early twenties\, he was deeply immersed in the world of mushrooms\, experimenting with wild foraging in South Florida\, yeast cultivation for brewing\, and even developing early prototypes for automated indoor growing systems. His academic journey\, culminating in a Ph.D. in Applied and Environmental Microbiology from Georgia State University\, further deepened his understanding of fungal biology. It was at GSU where he met fellow graduate student Chris Cornelison\, who would later become his co-founder\, and shared a similar passion for mycology. While his graduate research explored the complexities of fungal biology\, focusing on areas like fungal pathogens and brewing science\, it solidified his belief in the immense potential of mushrooms. \nAfter graduating and joining Kennesaw State University in 2017\, Dr. Gabriel\, along with fellow researcher Dr. Cornelison\, saw a critical need for accessible and effective growing solutions for cultivators of all levels. This Georgia Science Junction is FREE to all attendees! \n \n  \nThings feel quite scary right now for a lot of us. We face severe threats both on a political level and perhaps also from some members of our own families and communities. And it is because we do not agree\, we do not see the same things. \nBut the title of the talk is true\, things can be a lot better. The people who don’t agree could be seeing so much more of your side of things. We could be bringing far more of the voters in this country along with us on a path or growth and learning. And it is imperative that we do so. Learn hands-on in this workshop what are the key ingredients to changing minds and fighting misinformation. \n \nSpeaker Name: Michael Czajkowski\, PhD \nSpeaker Bio: \nMichael got their PhD in Physics in 2018 after helping found a science policy graduate student group at Syracuse University. As an IGERT fellow\, they received additional training in communication and advocacy in the Falk College Department of Public Health and the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications. Michael moved to Atlanta to work as a postdoc in metamaterial physics at Georgia Tech and has been involved with Science for Georgia for six of those years. DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, May 22nd\, 7-9 pm \nIn-Person and Streaming \nLocation: Wild Heaven West End\, 1010 White St SW\, Atlanta\, GA 30310 \nFeatured Speaker: Break The Cycle Speakers – \n\nDr. Leslie Ruben\nKevin Li\n\n \nThe Annual Break the Cycle of Children’s Environmental Health Disparities Program (BTC) supports an interdisciplinary set of student-driven research projects that explore the social\, economic\, and environmental factors that adversely affect children’s health and well-being and generate creative strategies to mitigate or reverse those adverse factors and provide the children with greater opportunities for a healthier\, more secure\, and brighter future for themselves and for their children. Students who are selected to participate in the annual program are required to complete their projects\, present their work at our annual conference\, and write manuscripts on their projects for publication. \n  \nSince its inception in 2004\, Break the Cycle (BTC) has partnered with over 80 university departments across 21 States in the US\, as well as from 6 countries in Latin America and 2 countries in Africa\, and has supported research for over 200 trainees. Annual BTC trainee projects are published in international journals and a book series on public health.  Alumni of the BTC program rate their mentored research experiences highly and many pursue careers related to their Break the Cycle projects. \n  \n \nSpeaker Name: Kevin Li\, Dr. Leslie Ruben \nSpeaker Bio: \nKevin Li is a senior at Emory University pursuing a major in Chemistry and a minor in Comparative Literature. He co-leads Sprouting Readers\, an after-school literacy program serving disadvantaged communities in Atlanta. Working alongside Eva\, Mica\, and Janet\, Kevin helps integrate reading with STEAM activities\, nutrition education\, and environmental awareness. The program\, established by Joan Wilson\, takes a holistic approach to childhood development\, aiming to improve not only reading skills but also health literacy and long-term wellness outcomes. Inspired by his work with Sprouting Readers\, Kevin plans to attend medical school and explore how narrative medicine can help address systemic health disparities. \n  \nDr. Leslie Rubin\, Break the Cycle Director\, is a Developmental Pediatrician who is originally from South Africa where he trained in Pediatrics and came to the USA in 1976. He was initially in Cleveland Ohio\, then in Boston Massachusetts\, and now in Atlanta Georgia. He is a Developmental Pediatrician at the Morehouse School of Medicine and at Emory University. Sci4Ga’s Data for Georgia program has developed several story maps in service of various Georgia communities. Recent years\, however\, have seen an explosion of studies into these substances and their effects at nearly every level of analysis—from the workings of brain cells to the behavior of lab animals to patients suffering from debilitating anxiety\, PTSD\, and depression. The effects of psychedelic drugs are just beginning to be explored by basic research and there is much we do not understand. However\, when viewed through the framework of a new theory of brain function—termed the “predictive processing model”—their effects offer new insight to one of the greatest mysteries of science: Consciousness. The model says that consciousness is as much about the brain’s best guess about the world as it is about the patterns of energy received by our senses. Cognitive neuroscientist Bradley Cooke will discuss recent research findings\, interpret the effects of psychedelics on consciousness\, and look at what value such substances hold for psychotherapy. \nAbout Our Speaker:    \n \nBradley Cooke has been a neuroscientist for more than 20 years. He received his Ph.D. from UC Berkeley in 2000 and completed a postdoctoral fellowship at Northwestern University before being appointed at Georgia State\, where he was promoted to associate professor before leaving to work in public service. Join us to learn why the current practice is so very hungry and about new algorithms that can provide the same\, or better\, computation at a fraction of the power usage. \n  \n\n\n\n\nMore About Our Speakers: \nVijay Madisetti\, Fellow IEEE\, AIIA\, Professor @ Georgia Tech\, Cybersecurity and Privacy (SCP)\, College of Computing.\n\n\n\n\n\nVijay Madisetti earned a Bachelor of Technology (Honors) degree from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT)\, Kharagpur\, India\, in Electronics and Electrical Communications Engineering in 1984. Following this\, he went to the University of California at Berkeley where he earned a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences in 1989. \nDr. Madisetti joined the ECE faculty at Georgia Tech in 1989. He leads several research and educational programs at Georgia Tech in the area of digital signal processing\, embedded computing systems\, chip design\, wireless and telecom systems\, and systems engineering. He has authored or edited several books\, including VLSI Digital Signal Processors (1995) and the Digital Signal Processing Handbook (Second Edition\, 2010). He is also a frequent consultant to the industry. \nDr. Madisetti is a Fellow of the IEEE and was awarded the 2006 Frederick Emmons Terman Medal by the American Society of Engineering Education (ASEE) and HP Corporations for his contributions to electrical engineering. He is currently serving on several campus initiatives\, and is the Executive Director of Georgia Tech’s India Initiative. Dr. Madisetti also received the Georgia Tech Doctoral Thesis Advisor Award from Georgia Tech in 2001. \n\n\n\nXiao Huang\, Ph.D.\, Assistant Professor\, Department of Environmental Sciences\, Emory University \n\n\n\nDr. Huang’s research primarily focuses on human-environment interaction\, computational social sciences\, vulnerability and resilience\, urban informatics\, disaster mapping and mitigation\, GeoAI and deep learning\, and disaster remote sensing. Different from traditional geospatial analysis\, his research takes advantage of rapidly growing data availability through the utilization of emerging\, innovative data sources and the development of advanced geospatial analytical techniques to address existing/future challenges in disaster studies (e.g.\, real-time monitoring\, assessment\, and mitigation) and human society (e.g.\, human behaviors\, vulnerability\, and inequity) from Big Data and spatiotemporal perspectives. But what exactly is a fissure eruption?  In this talk\, geologist Dr. Tamie Jovanelly will discuss the mechanics of a fissure eruption\, highlight historical eruptions in Iceland that have had global consequences and explain the current volcanics on the island. How does voting in political races differ from the way college teams are ranked or how the Oscars are awarded? And how can a business\, city\, or state choose among multiple candidates for a program without a costly and time-consuming runoff procedure? The answers to these questions can be found in understanding concepts from Ranked Choice Voting and Game Theory\, a branch of mathematics devoted to interactive decisions.   \nIf you’ve heard phrases like “win-win” and “zero-sum” or seen movies like “The Dark Knight” and “A Beautiful Mind”\, you’ve already been exposed to ideas from game theory.
