Her work focuses on developing engaging\, evidence-based educational resources that support both educators and student learning. \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nDr. Bill Witherspoon\nDr. Bill Witherspoon (video presenter) is producer of the Rock On\, Mother Earth podcast series and co-author of Roadside Geology of Georgia. Since the book appeared in 2013\, Bill has presented more than 100 walks\, talks\, and workshops throughout the state. He completed his PhD at the University of Tennessee in 1981 with a study of the geological structure of the Great Smokies. Bill taught at UT Chattanooga\, then investigated the structure of northeast Alaska and adjacent Canada in the Global Geology section of Shell Development Company. He became a business co-owner and software developer\, then began 17 years as a geoscience educator at Fernbank Science Center\, part of DeKalb County Schools. In 2007\, the National Association of Geoscience Teachers named him Georgia Outstanding Earth Science Teacher. Since retirement in 2014\, Bill has studied climate science\, economics\, and communication at Georgia Tech and Georgia State. His next teaching project will engage several of the experts who mentored and inspired his climate studies in “Conversations on Climate\,” an 8-part series taught onsite in Tucker for the Senior University of Greater Atlanta\, beginning January 17. \n  \nGeorgia Science Junction

Water usage is becoming a very pressing issue as Atlanta keeps growing and more data centers and cryptomines that use millions of galleons per day are built all over Georgia. We need that water for agriculture\, industry and everyday public uses. \nWater is the lifeblood of our planet. Throughout history to the present day\, wars have been waged over this precious resource\, and Georgia is no exception. The presentation will provide an overview of conflicts over groundwater resources of Georgia and adjacent South Carolina\, Alabama\, and Florida. This includes saltwater intrusion along the coast\, the Okefenokee Swamp\, groundwater contamination at the Savannah River Site\, and effects of agricultural pumping on streamflow in the Chattahoochee-Flint River Basin. \n  \nIf you missed part one\, you can view the YouTube recording below to catch up. This talk will somewhat reference the previous talk but it will not be needed to understand. \n \nSpeaker Name: John Clarke\, Retired Assistant Director\, USGS Georgia Water Science Center\, Atlanta\, Georgia \nSpeaker Bio: John Clarke retired in January 2014 after a 35-year career with the USGS Georgia Water Science Center. As hydrologist and Assistant Director for Hydrologic Investigations\, he authored or co-authored more than 50 papers on Georgia groundwater and twice served as president of the Georgia Ground Water Association. Notable project work included study of the potential for offsite migration of contaminants at the U.S. Department of Energy’s Savannah River Site; development of a hydrologic overview of Israel\, Jordan\, and Palestinian territories as part of the State Department’s ongoing peace initiative; and design and implementation of the Georgia Coastal Sound Science Initiative—a 7 ½-year\, $14.5 million set of projects commissioned by the Georgia Environmental Protection Division to assess coastal area groundwater resources and address issues of salt-water intrusion and resource sustainability. John is a certified groundwater professional and received a BS Degree in Earth Sciences from the State University of New York at Brockport. \nGeorgia Science Junction

From 2021-2023 she served in the Epidemic Intelligence Service as a field officer in North Carolina where she played the role of the state Legionella subject matter expert and worked on state and national outbreaks of infectious disease including monkeypox virus\, COVID-19\, highly-pathogenic avian influenza\, pediatric hepatitis\, and varicella. She also played roles in advising residents on rabies exposure guidelines and dragging ticks for Powassan virus. She received her Doctor of Medicine degree in 2018 at Tulane University and completed her residency in Internal Medicine at UC Riverside in 2021 where she co-founded Inland Empire Harm Reduction.\n\nIn her free time Erin is an entomology hobbyist and helps operate the National Spider Support Facebook group and moderate r/spiderbites and r/brownreclusebites on Reddit. Throughout history to the present day\, wars have been waged over this precious resource.  In Georgia\, conflicts have arisen with competitors in adjacent states and within our borders. This presentation will focus on surface water issues including the quantity and quality of water in the Chattahoochee-Flint and Savannah Rivers\, sewer spills and leaks\, and interbasin transfers. \nJohn Clarke\nSpeaker Name: \nJohn Clarke\, Retired Assistant Director\, USGS Georgia Water Science Center\, Atlanta\, Georgia\nSpeaker Bio: \nJohn Clarke retired in January 2014 after a 35-year career with the USGS Georgia Water Science Center. As hydrologist and Assistant Director for Hydrologic Investigations\, he authored or co-authored more than 50 papers on Georgia groundwater\, and twice served as president of the Georgia Ground Water Association.  Notable project work included study of the potential for offsite migration of contaminants at the U.S. Department of Energy’s Savannah River Site; development of a hydrologic overview of Israel\, Jordan\, and Palestinian territories as part of the State Department’s ongoing peace initiative; and design and implementation of the Georgia Coastal Sound Science Initiative—a 7 ½-year\, $14.5 million set of projects commissioned by the Georgia Environmental Protection Division to assess coastal area groundwater resources and address issues of salt-water intrusion and resource sustainability. John is a certified groundwater professional and received a BS Degree in Earth Sciences from the State University of New York at Brockport. \n

We face severe threats both on a political level and perhaps also from some members of our own families and communities. The people who don’t agree could be seeing so much more of your side of things. We could be bringing far more of the voters in this country along with us on a path or growth and learning. And it is imperative that we do so. Students who are selected to participate in the annual program are required to complete their projects\, present their work at our annual conference\, and write manuscripts on their projects for publication. \n  \nSince its inception in 2004\, Break the Cycle (BTC) has partnered with over 80 university departments across 21 States in the US\, as well as from 6 countries in Latin America and 2 countries in Africa\, and has supported research for over 200 trainees. Annual BTC trainee projects are published in international journals and a book series on public health.  Alumni of the BTC program rate their mentored research experiences highly and many pursue careers related to their Break the Cycle projects. \n  \n \nSpeaker Name: Kevin Li\, Dr. Leslie Ruben \nSpeaker Bio: \nKevin Li is a senior at Emory University pursuing a major in Chemistry and a minor in Comparative Literature. He co-leads Sprouting Readers\, an after-school literacy program serving disadvantaged communities in Atlanta. Working alongside Eva\, Mica\, and Janet\, Kevin helps integrate reading with STEAM activities\, nutrition education\, and environmental awareness. The program\, established by Joan Wilson\, takes a holistic approach to childhood development\, aiming to improve not only reading skills but also health literacy and long-term wellness outcomes. Inspired by his work with Sprouting Readers\, Kevin plans to attend medical school and explore how narrative medicine can help address systemic health disparities. \n  \nDr. Leslie Rubin\, Break the Cycle Director\, is a Developmental Pediatrician who is originally from South Africa where he trained in Pediatrics and came to the USA in 1976. He was initially in Cleveland Ohio\, then in Boston Massachusetts\, and now in Atlanta Georgia. He is a Developmental Pediatrician at the Morehouse School of Medicine and at Emory University. We face severe threats both on a political level and perhaps also from some members of our own families and communities. And it is because we do not agree\, we do not see the same things. \nBut the title of the talk is true\, things can be a lot better. The people who don’t agree could be seeing so much more of your side of things. We could be bringing far more of the voters in this country along with us on a path or growth and learning. And it is imperative that we do so. Learn hands-on in this workshop what are the key ingredients to changing minds and fighting misinformation. \n \nSpeaker Name: Michael Czajkowski \nSpeaker Bio: \nMichael got their PhD in Physics in 2018 after helping found a science policy graduate student group at Syracuse University. As an IGERT fellow\, they received additional training in communication and advocacy in the Falk College Department of Public Health and the S. I. Newhouse School of Public Communications. Michael moved to Atlanta to work as a postdoc in metamaterial physics at Georgia Tech and has been involved with Science for Georgia for six of those years. DESCRIPTION:Friday\, November 22nd\, 7-9 pm \nIn-Person and Streaming \nLocation: Wild Heaven Brewing\, West End – 1010 White St SW\, Atlanta\, GA 30310 \nFeatured Speaker: Bradley Cooke\, PhD\n \nChaos to New Order: How Psychedelics Affect the Mind – 2024 Update \nFor decades\, strict drug laws rendered practically impossible research on psychedelic drugs such as psilocybin and lysergic acid. Recent years\, however\, have seen an explosion of studies into these substances and their effects at nearly every level of analysis—from the workings of brain cells to the behavior of lab animals to patients suffering from debilitating anxiety\, PTSD\, and depression. The effects of psychedelic drugs are just beginning to be explored by basic research and there is much we do not understand. However\, when viewed through the framework of a new theory of brain function—termed the “predictive processing model”—their effects offer new insight to one of the greatest mysteries of science: Consciousness. The model says that consciousness is as much about the brain’s best guess about the world as it is about the patterns of energy received by our senses. Cognitive neuroscientist Bradley Cooke will discuss recent research findings\, interpret the effects of psychedelics on consciousness\, and look at what value such substances hold for psychotherapy. \nAbout Our Speaker:    \n \nBradley Cooke has been a neuroscientist for more than 20 years. He received his Ph.D. from UC Berkeley in 2000 and completed a postdoctoral fellowship at Northwestern University before being appointed at Georgia State\, where he was promoted to associate professor before leaving to work in public service. Join us to learn why the current practice is so very hungry and about new algorithms that can provide the same\, or better\, computation at a fraction of the power usage. \n  \n\n\n\n\nMore About Our Speakers: \nVijay Madisetti\, Fellow IEEE\, AIIA\, Professor @ Georgia Tech\, Cybersecurity and Privacy (SCP)\, College of Computing.\n\n\n\n\n\nVijay Madisetti earned a Bachelor of Technology (Honors) degree from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT)\, Kharagpur\, India\, in Electronics and Electrical Communications Engineering in 1984. Following this\, he went to the University of California at Berkeley where he earned a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences in 1989. \nDr. Madisetti joined the ECE faculty at Georgia Tech in 1989. He leads several research and educational programs at Georgia Tech in the area of digital signal processing\, embedded computing systems\, chip design\, wireless and telecom systems\, and systems engineering. He has authored or edited several books\, including VLSI Digital Signal Processors (1995) and the Digital Signal Processing Handbook (Second Edition\, 2010). He is also a frequent consultant to the industry. \nDr. Madisetti is a Fellow of the IEEE and was awarded the 2006 Frederick Emmons Terman Medal by the American Society of Engineering Education (ASEE) and HP Corporations for his contributions to electrical engineering. He is currently serving on several campus initiatives\, and is the Executive Director of Georgia Tech’s India Initiative. Dr. Madisetti also received the Georgia Tech Doctoral Thesis Advisor Award from Georgia Tech in 2001. \n\n\n\nXiao Huang\, Ph.D.\, Assistant Professor\, Department of Environmental Sciences\, Emory University \n\n\n\nDr. Huang’s research primarily focuses on human-environment interaction\, computational social sciences\, vulnerability and resilience\, urban informatics\, disaster mapping and mitigation\, GeoAI and deep learning\, and disaster remote sensing. Different from traditional geospatial analysis\, his research takes advantage of rapidly growing data availability through the utilization of emerging\, innovative data sources and the development of advanced geospatial analytical techniques to address existing/future challenges in disaster studies (e.g.\, real-time monitoring\, assessment\, and mitigation) and human society (e.g.\, human behaviors\, vulnerability\, and inequity) from Big Data and spatiotemporal perspectives. But what exactly is a fissure eruption?  In this talk\, geologist Dr. Tamie Jovanelly will discuss the mechanics of a fissure eruption\, highlight historical eruptions in Iceland that have had global consequences and explain the current volcanics on the island. How does voting in political races differ from the way college teams are ranked or how the Oscars are awarded? And how can a business\, city\, or state choose among multiple candidates for a program without a costly and time-consuming runoff procedure?
